JLBA MEDICAL RECHERCHE is a non-profit medical research association founded in 1995, based in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, France. Since its creation, the association has been committed to the rigorous pursuit of scientific knowledge in the medical field, with a particular emphasis on independent inquiry, collaborative research, and ethical standards. Our headquarters, located within the Espace Médical Charcot, reflects our integration within a broader medical ecosystem, enabling us to remain close to clinical practice while maintaining a strong scientific identity.
We were founded with the conviction that high-quality medical research should not be confined solely to academic institutions or large industrial laboratories. Instead, we believe that non-profit and independent structures have a unique role to play in fostering innovation, ensuring research diversity, and addressing questions that may be overlooked by mainstream funding priorities. Our association represents that mission: a small yet dedicated collective of professionals determined to contribute to the scientific community and, more broadly, to public health.
A Foundation Rooted in Independence and Scientific Integrity
The origins of JLBA MEDICAL RECHERCHE are grounded in the desire to create a research structure that is free from commercial or political pressure. Our founders—medical practitioners, researchers, and professionals from various scientific backgrounds—shared the belief that research should serve human health first and foremost, not profit or institutional prestige. This belief continues to guide our work today.
Over the past decades, we have conducted or participated in multiple projects exploring a wide range of medical questions. From clinical trials and epidemiological studies to data analysis, literature reviews, and observational research, our scope has grown to include various disciplines. While we do not aim to compete with large research institutions, our strength lies in our ability to be flexible, precise, and mission-focused.
We pride ourselves on our methodological rigor and transparency. All of our projects are undertaken in strict accordance with ethical standards, national regulations, and international norms concerning research involving human subjects, data privacy, and scientific publication.
A Collaborative Approach to Research
JLBA MEDICAL RECHERCHE functions as a networked association. Rather than relying on a fixed laboratory model, we work collaboratively with a range of partners—clinicians, hospitals, universities, independent scientists, statisticians, and public health professionals. This approach allows us to remain dynamic and interdisciplinary, adapting to the needs of each specific project and building research teams tailored to the subject matter.
In many cases, we act as coordinators or facilitators of research initiatives, bringing together expertise from different domains to pursue a shared objective. In other cases, we contribute specific competencies—such as protocol design, literature synthesis, or data management—to broader collaborative efforts.
We are also committed to disseminating the findings of our work through scientific publications, presentations, and open-access platforms whenever possible. We believe that research should contribute to the collective knowledge base and that transparency in results—whether positive, negative, or inconclusive—is essential to scientific progress.
A Human-Centered Philosophy
Behind every study, data set, or research question, there are people: patients, healthcare providers, families, and communities. At JLBA MEDICAL RECHERCHE, we never lose sight of this. Our work is driven not just by intellectual curiosity or technical goals, but by a genuine commitment to the well-being of individuals and populations.
We recognize that modern medical research is not merely about developing new technologies or treatments, but also about understanding needs, identifying gaps, and evaluating the real-world impact of medical practices. In our view, research should serve not only to innovate but to inform and to challenge assumptions when necessary.
Whether we are studying patterns of disease, evaluating therapeutic interventions, or exploring ethical implications of emerging technologies, we approach every topic with humility, responsibility, and a long-term vision.
Building a Space for Scientific Exchange
As an association, we also aim to foster a space where ideas, methods, and reflections can be shared freely. Over the years, we have organized internal workshops, research seminars, and thematic meetings. These events allow our members and guests to stay informed about evolving methodologies, regulatory frameworks, and ethical debates within the scientific community.
We view continuing education and critical discussion as vital components of research. Our members come from a range of backgrounds, including medicine, biology, epidemiology, bioethics, statistics, and social sciences, and this diversity enriches our work.
We also seek to support the next generation of researchers by offering mentoring, co-authorship opportunities, and, where appropriate, structured guidance in research methodology and project development.
Long-Term Commitments
Medical research is not a short-term endeavor. It requires patience, resilience, and a willingness to accept uncertainty. JLBA MEDICAL RECHERCHE was built for the long haul. While some of our projects are short in duration, many span several years and involve ongoing analysis, follow-up, and adaptation.
We believe in pursuing questions that matter—questions that might take time to answer fully but which hold the potential to improve knowledge, practice, and health outcomes. We are not driven by trends, but by relevance. This commitment to long-term engagement allows us to focus on substance rather than visibility.
A Modest Yet Meaningful Role
We are aware that we are a small structure in the vast landscape of global medical research. Yet, we do not see this as a limitation. On the contrary, we believe that every contribution counts and that meaningful progress is often the result of cumulative, collaborative efforts.
Our size allows us to remain agile and focused, to undertake projects that larger institutions might find too small or complex to manage, and to work with a variety of partners across disciplines and sectors. We maintain a strong sense of purpose and accountability, knowing that our credibility depends entirely on the quality and integrity of our work.
Looking Ahead
JLBA MEDICAL RECHERCHE will continue to evolve in response to the changing challenges of science and society. We are currently exploring new areas of study, including the role of artificial intelligence in diagnostics, the social dimensions of public health interventions, and the ethical implications of data-driven medicine.
At the same time, we remain grounded in our core mission: to pursue research that is independent, ethical, and useful. We invite all those who share this vision—whether researchers, practitioners, institutions, or engaged citizens—to get in touch with us and explore ways to collaborate.
